Many of us learned at a young age that it wasn’t safe to fully express our emotions. Instead of being met with comfort, we were taught to “be strong,” “don’t cry,” or “keep it together.” Over time, our bodies adapted by shutting down sadness and burying shame. This survival strategy often shows up as collapse, numbness, depression, or dissociation the nervous system’s way of protecting us from overwhelm.
But what gets buried doesn’t disappear. Those tender parts of us that feel unworthy, unseen, or forgotten are still there longing for care. The pathway out of shame and freeze isn’t through force or judgment, but through compassion. Breathwork offers a direct way to reconnect with those hidden places and gently bring them into the light.
